THE BELGICA NEAR ANVERS ISLAND, GRAHAM LAND JANUARY 1898

We see the Belgian converted whaler Belgica moored near Anvers island, Graham Land. The Belgica was the first ship to penetrate this part of the Antarctic Peninsula and this Strait, much used by whalers in the years after its discovery, was named after Adrian de Gerlache the Belgica's captain.
