SAIL AND STEAM, EVENING

The nineteenth century saw steam gradually overtake sail as the means of driving vessels. This painting tries to evoke the 'sunset' of commercial sailing ships by juxtaposing a tall three-masted barque moored with a passenger liner moving down river.
